And the winner is...

WESTERN® Premium BBQ Products has teamed up with Gruene Harley-Davidson, The City of Helotes and the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce to host the largest BBQ cook-off series in the state of Texas, the WESTERN W3 BBQ Cook-Off Series. Each event will play host to 150 of the best BBQ teams from all over the world.

The Series will consist of three BBQ cook-offs, sanctioned by the International Barbecue Cookers Association (IBCA) and linked together by a point accumulation system (points chase).  Each cook-off is projected to pay out $35,000 plus prizes. That creates a grand total of well over $100,000 in payouts directly to cookers. Further, the team earning the most points in the series will become the WESTERN W3 Grand Champion and will win $5000.  The second highest point-earning team (Reserve Grand Champion) will win $1000 and the highest point-earning team in each meat category will each win $500. This will create a total projected payout of over $100,000.

>Complete Rules

The series will kick off in the historic community of New Braunfels, Texas at Gruene Harley-Davidson on November 22-23, 2013.  The second event will take place the last weekend of January 2014 on the 24th and 25th at the Festival Grounds in Helotes, Texas.  The series will wrap up on the weekend of WESTERN’s birthday in their hometown of Pleasanton, Texas, March 21-22, 2014 when the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce hosts Turn-N-Burn.

Our goal is to provide you, the BBQ team, with a great experience, well-organized events, large payouts and a fun time.  In addition to three fantastic Cook-Offs, each event venue will offer its own unique blend of entertainment ranging from live music, washer and horse shoe competitions, motorcycle rallies and team roping events.

The third event in the WESTERN W3 BBQ Cook-Off Series, Turn-N-Burn, took place March 21-22, 2014 at the Atascosa Show Barn in Pleasanton, Texas. The sold out cook-off shattered the Texas record in total dollars paid to cook-off winners by paying out $36,500 plus a $9600 One Man Pit as well as heaps of products from WESTERN Premium BBQ Products.  When all of the math was done, the event paid out well over $47,000 in cash and prizes.  On top of that, $7,500 was paid out to winners of the Series the same night, bringing the grand total to almost $55,000.  Wow!

The first of its kind Series raised the bar for cook-offs in Texas and nationwide through use of a new scoring system.  While still utilizing the “double-blind” judging method touted by the International Barbecue Cookers Association (IBCA), the new and innovative scoring system combined points earned for advancement through four judging rounds with points for top placement in the event.  This not only allowed for cookers to see how far their trays advanced through judging rounds, but it made for some hefty competition.

Clarence “CJ” Joseph (The Rainmaker) of Mama and Papa Joe’s BBQ leaped into first place overall by accumulating 111 Series Points for the weekend, giving him a whopping 195 total Series Points to claim the Grand Champion title of the WESTERN W3 BBQ Cook-Off Series.  Although Paul Carnell of PJ’s Smokehouse was not able to keep his lead, he did manage to earn the Reserve Grand Champion distinction with 189 Series Points.  In third place overall was Hampton Pratka of BottleCap Cookers with 182 Series Points.  Hampton was the early leader after the first event. The rest of the 225 teams that entered the WESTERN W3 BBQ Cook-Off Series are listed in order on the website.

The overall Series Chicken winner is Joseph Severson of Cool Hands Cookers, who accumulated 83 Series Points in that category.  Hampton Pratka of BottleCap Cookers took second overall Chicken with 77 Series Points and Clarence “CJ” Joseph of Mama and Papa Joe’s BBQ took third place Chicken with 71 Series Points.

Darwin Hoel of Giant was not able to hold off Paul Carnell of PJ’s Smokehouse who stormed into first place overall in Pork Spare Ribs with 92 Series Points.  Giant finished strong with 75 Series points and Hampton Pratka of BottleCap Cookers took third place Ribs with 71 Series Points.

The biggest battle became Brisket when Mary Praytor of Flirtin’ With Fire stormed her way to first place Brisket by earning 97 Series Points in that category.  Clarence “CJ” Joseph of Mama and Papa Joe’s BBQ took second place Brisket with 86 Series Points and Monte Brown of Trash Can Cookers finished in third place with 77 Series Points.

Thank you to all the cookers who participated in the WESTERN W3 BBQ Cook-Off Series.  As we look to the future, plans are being discussed for potential events.  Nothing is concrete at this moment.  For now, we are happy for our contestants and winners and wish everyone the best of luck in their next competition, wherever it may be.
